OK, have read enough of these to realise we have the same taste in books Eleanor, so am buying the rest. I couldn't finish A Little Life either. For summer romps by the beach, The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo is great fun and has a brilliant ending. Love, love, love everything single thing ever written by Elisabeth Strout, including a touching tale of a fraught mother-daughter relationship My Name is Lucy Barton (also astonishingly great play at the Bridge Theater). And if you like Strout, you'll probably appreciate one of my author all-time favourite authors, Canadian Carole Shields (who sadly died too young) - try Unless. Or Happenstance, about a troubled marriage, written from each partner's side, in turn, and you have to flip the book over physically. Happy summer!
Another essential read which got left off in the edit is Great Circle by Maggie Shipstead! The book I am giving everyone at the moment!
